A Bachelor of Music from the Uruguayan University in Montevideo, Laura Dearmas began her musical activity at the piano, and has a professional career in this instrument that is worth mentioning. She has been guided by masters Santiago Baranda Reyes, Raquel Boldorini, Manfredo Gerhardt, Sarah Bourdillon and composer Guido Santórsola recording a great part of his repertoire for piano.
Her admiration upon sonorities achieved by Santórsola made her organize, 1994 and 1995, two Tributes in his honour, supported by the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute, from which live registers are included herein.
She won the National Contest of Musical Youths (JJMM); the Musical Student Association Competition (AEMUS); Artigas-Washington Library Competition, she got the Prize "Rosa López Comunión" as best performer of Spanish music in “Music in Compostela/1990”. In 1993 she got a cultural exchange scholarship to California from Fullbright Amity Institute.
Such awards led her to perform concerts as a soloist player and in camera groups in the main auditoriums of Montevideo, the Uruguayan provinces and Spain.
In 1995 she starts fulfilling a long postponed wish: to dedicate to the interpretation of ancient and baroque music, types of music, that together with the contemporary period, were her everlasting passion from the beginning. She got a scholarship to perform high studies related to this instrument at Zaragoza Superior Conservatory under the guideline of José Luis G.Uriol, obtaining the title of Higher Professor in this instrument with the highest grades. From 1997 to 2001 she finished and obtained a “Harpsichord Graduation” at the Federal University of Campinas (UNICAMP-Brazil) with Edmundo Hora. From that on, fruitful exchanges between Uruguay and Brazil in pro of baroque music have been taking place, with the support of Mercedes Olivera Association and Mozarteum Foundation of Uruguay.
Concerts as soloist, chamber concerts and harpsichord duo with her sister, harpsichordist Nives Dearmas, led her to carry out several performances in different auditoriums and Brazilian festivals with Baroque Orchestra “Armónico Tributo”, Manfred Kraemer, Rosana Lanzelotte, Lucia Carpena and Edmundo Hora in the International Early Music Festival of Curitiba, São Pedro Theater in Porto Alegre, São Bento Monastery in Sao Paulo, University of Campinas, São josé dos Campos, and International Festival of Campos do Jordão. She performed at Salamanca, Vigo, Zaragoza and Madrid (Juan March Foundation).
Whenever she can Laura Dearmas participates actively in Master-Classes with the greatest masters of this style.
In Uruguay she plays annually in different series of concerts organized by the Catholic University, Mozarteum Foundation, Cabildo of Montevideo, Chamber Concerts Series of the SODRE.
She was invited, by renowned guitarist Master Abel Carlevaro, to play with him his “Del Plata Concerto” (1998), as a first audition in Uruguay, within the framework of the “International Guitar Festival”. Such work was recorded live the following year at the Cabildo in Montevideo.
In 2002 she brought out a CD with the integral version of J.S.Bach’s “Goldberg Variations”, under the "Mozarteum" label of Uruguay.
In 2004 she organized, a deserved tribute to composer Guido Santórsola on his 100 birthday anniversary, with the Mozarteum, SODRE and Brazilian Embassy support, Then she performed the “Double Concert for Guitar and Harpsichord soloist and Chamber Orchestra”. This work is performed again in 2005 in a series of concerts at the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil) with the UNISINOS Orchestra (live register is included herein).
In 2008 she won the prize awarded by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Uruguay, in the annual competition “Funds for Cultural and Artistic Development” (music category), with the Project “Our Musical Past in its Three Stages: The Saloon, The Theatre and The Church”. In the latest edition (2012) she has just won two prizes with the projects “Three Centuries of History through Song and Chamber Music”, playing organ, harpsichord and fortepiano; and “Tribute to Carlos Guastavino”, with Bass Marcelo Otegui.
Parallel to this activity, Laura integrates, since 2000 the “Dearmas Duo” with Nives Dearmas developing an important agenda in Uruguay and abroad in a wide repertoire for harpsichord duets, ranging from baroque style to the diffusion of uruguayan contemporaneous music original for this instrument, the rioplatenses rhythms as Tango, Milonga and Candombe.
They recorded “German Music for Two Harpsichords”, opening the 2010 Season of Miami Bach Society, and they are launching the recently released CD “Del Plata Concerto” , in a tribute to Professor and Composer Abel Carlevaro. In november 2011 this record earned them a concert tour in Israel, Holland and Spain, under the auspices of the Ministry of Cultura and Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Uruguay.
Laura Dearmas is a renowned piano teacher in Uruguay, whose method and results she shares in Spanish page : “DOCENCIA”.
Since 2008 she directs with her sister Nives the course of “Introduction to piano and harpsichord” at The Anglo School.
